A Gift from God: Tribute to Dr. Fathi Dahir Sh. Adam

E-mail Print PDF

Allah swt stated in the holy book "Every soul shall taste death".  !

Dr. Fathi Dahir Sheikh Adam was born on a blessed Monday morning on the 20th, day of the month of April, 1968 in Mogadishu. Fathi was a gift God gave to his father Dahir Sh. Adam and his mother Asha Adam Gabayre. He was an exceptionally gifted child, born to two, god fearing; dedicated and extremely kind parents; who raised him in loving and caring environment, where he grew up and became a decent human being.

Like many other Somali children in Mogadishu then, Fathi started Dugsi Quran at the tender age of four, and started grade school in a Somali medium school. Completing grade eight with high marks, Fathi went on to study at Jamal Abdinasir Secondary School, where the language of instruction was Arabic. Fathi excelled in his high school years and graduated at the top of his cohort. In 1985/86, Fathi was admitted into the Faculty of Medicine, of the Somali National University where the medium of instruction was Italian Fathi successfully completed four years obtaining all the required theoretical classes.
On March 21, 1991, Fathi, his father and half of the Sheikh Adam family fled Mogadishu and travelled to Shilaabo; going back to his father and grandfather’s birth place. Fathi mother, younger sister and the other half of his family fled to Kismaayo and went into Kenya. Later on the family was reunited in the Ogaden.

In 1992, Dr. Fathi Dahir Sh. Adam was asked to produce his credentials if he wanted to practice medicine in Ethiopia and complete his residency. Of course, like many others like him, Fathi’s degree and transcripts were still in Mogadishu. Realizing the opportunity and how this would turn Fathi’s life around, his mother, Eedo Asha Adan Gabayre, insisted on going back to get his credentials out of Mogadishu. With the determination and commitment only mothers are capable of, Fathi’s mother  risked her life and travelled by road to Mogadishu, after 18 long days and an extremely dangerous travel ordeal, which she lived to tell about, Fathi’s mother brought back his original transcripts.  Dr. Fathi enrolled into Addis Ababa University, to complete his residency and successfully obtained his medical license.

In the mid nineties, Dr. Fathi Dahir Sh. Adam, started practicing medicine in the Ogaden region after he obtained his general practitioner license from Addis Ababa University. Dr. Fathi served his community by laying down the foundations for a much needed health care system from scratch in the Somali Ogaden region. Dr. Fathi served as the medical director in Godey, leaving behind the comfortable life he could have had in bigger cities Dr. Fathi, chose to work tirelessly facing, head on, the hard realities of under-development, severe lack of resources and marginalized pastoral communities. He worked in small towns, remote and rural areas with unwavering commitment and the sole purpose of alleviating the pain and suffering of his people.

Dr. Fathi also worked in various hospitals in the Ogaden, holding different responsibilities. He served as the Head of the Disease Control and Prevention Department of the Health Bureau of the Somali Regional State (Ogaden). Dr. Fathi also worked for the World Health Organization, where he operationalized and implemented several health programs and initiatives for the World Health Organization, in the Somali region as well as in Nigeria.

Later on Dr. Fathi Sheikh Adam won a scholarship, from the European Union and studied in Belgium where he obtained a Master’s degree of Public Health Administration. Dr. Fathi won another scholarship and came to the United States where studied at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where he successfully completed his Masters in Epidemiology, in 2004.

After completing his Master’s of Epidemiology studies in the US, Dr. Fathi Dahir Sh. Adam, decided to seek asylum. Dr. Fathi also decided to pursue a medical career in the States and embarked on a journey where he completed a number of courses, exams and professional certification programs as required by the American Board of Medical Specialists.

In addition to pursuing his medical license and restarting his professional practice of medicine in Minneapolis, MN; Dr. Fathi, together with some of his friends, established the Somali Medical Association of North America, where he served as the Secretary General, for more information about his organization, see http://www.somalimedicalassociationnordamerica.com. Dr. Fathi, used to regularly write and contribute to Ogaden Online public health information anonymously; so that the public will get health evidence information.

Dr. Fathi Dahir Sheikh Adam was the beloved son of a well respected family within the Somali community. He was a formidable young man, committed and dedicated to doing good for his Somalis, whether they were family or friends. Helping people and establishing lasting relationships came effortlessly to Dr. Fathi.
Dr. Fathi was indeed a gift to humanity.

Innaa lillaah wa innaa ileyhi raajicuun, Ilaahay (SW) jannadiisii fardowsa ha ugu deeqo Dr. Fathi

Mustafa Ilaahay ha kaa abaal mariyo sida aad noogu soo koobtay taariikh nololeedkiisii iyo halgankiisa waxbarasho.
Wuxuu mustafe isoo xasuusiyey xilligaas uu sheegay ee 1992kii ayaa marxuumka oo Shilaabo ka yimid ila soo degay guri ku yaallay Diredawa, kolkaasuu habeen igu yidhi "Axmedow walaal caawa inaad ila taliso ayaan kaa rabaa...". markii aan weydiiyey waxa lagala talinayo ayuu igu yidhi: "Dr. Cabdi Aadan oo xilligaas ahaa wasiir ku xigeenka W/caafimaadka ee Ethiopia, ahaan jirayna macallinkiisii jaamacadda Somalia, ayaa igu yidhi buu yidhi inaan inaan sii xoojiyo tacliintaydii curdanka ahayd takhasus xirfadeedna aan ka billaabo Isbitaalka weyn ee Addis ababa ku yaal ee Duqur-hambasa" (Libaaxa madow). marka inaan arrinkaas ku dhaqaaqo iyo inaaan iska sugo dhoof dibedda oo ii qalqaalsan?
waxaan ku idhi dhoofku ma wax hadda gacanta lagu hayaa mise waa rajo? wuxuu iigu jawaabay waa rajo, kolkaasaan idhi fursaddan ka faa'iidayso oo qaado talada Dr. cabdi Aadan.
Raabbi ha u naxriistee intuu qoslay oo madaxa kor iyo hoos u gundhiyey ayuu yidhi " Aabbahay iyo hooyaday ayaan arrinkan hore ugala tashaday, Aabbo wuxuu yidhi ka faa'iidayso fursaddan hooyana waxay tidhi iska sug dhoofkaaga, marka Aabbo ayaad isku fiker noqoteen taas ayaanan qaadan in-sha-Allaah"
waxaa halkaa kaaga cad inuu ahaa marxuumku talo-ruug wax hubsada isla markaana baarri jecel inuu labadiisa waalid raalli geliyo.
Ilaahay wixii uu xasaanad iyo wanaag sameeyey hawgu xoojiyo miisaanka aakhiro maalinta aysan waxba tarin maal iyo wiilaltoona, wixii ikhdaayaad ka dhacayna Ilaahay SW ha ka cafiyo.
ugu dambayntii Rabbi SW ha u aqbalo ducada mahiigaanka ah een ku shubnay marxuumkaa, eheladiisii oo dhan oon ka midnahayna Rabbir samir iyo iimaan haka siiyo Aammiinn...

O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, pardon him, grant him security, proved him on enjoyable place, and spacious lodgings, wash him (of his sins) with water, snow and ice. Purify him from his sins as white grament is cleansed form dirt, replace his present abode with a betterone, replace his present partner with a betterone, make him enter paradise and save him from the trials of the grave and punishment of hell.
