Excerpt from report by Ethiopian opposition
Radio Freedom audio website on 30 January
Radio Freedom correspondent reporting from
Ogaden [southeastern Ethiopia] has sent a
report on a fierce battle that occurred in
Gudis, Fik district, in which huge losses
were inflicted on lethargic colonial
Ethiopian troops.
Ogaden liberation commando units on 26
January 2007 carried out an attack on
colonial Ethiopian troops that had come to
Gudis to conduct a military operation,
inflicting defeat on them. In the attack, 45
colonial Ethiopian soldiers were killed,
among them the three military officers
commanding the troops. One of the officers
held the rank of Major. The reporter told
Radio Freedom that the Ogaden liberation
command was now in possession of an
important document recovered from the
remains of the Major along with his
identification paper. This senior military
officer was a member of the central
committee of the EPRDF [Ethiopian People's
Revolutionary Democratic Front] and the
commander of colonial troops based in
Sheygosh.
Many colonial Ethiopian soldiers were also
wounded. The wounded were airlifted by a
helicopter. Fifteen guns and several pieces
of communications equipment were captured.
After the defeat was inflicted upon them, as
usual, the troops went on a rampage against
civilians in the area. They killed Haybe
Saban - may God have mercy on him - an
elderly man of about 80 years old, and
wounded Mahad Rashid Yogol and Abshiro. Her
full name could not be obtained. [Passage
omitted: unrelated story].
