Ogaden: Civilian Transport Truck detentions |
Aug 30,
2008 Reports reaching our service desk
from the city of JigJiga indicate that many
transport trucks have been detained and
housed under armed guard in the Jibriga.
Local eyewitnesses put the number of the
transport trucks detained at 14 trucks. All
of these trucks were transporting badly
needed food supplies. It is reported that
the Ethiopian militias who hijacked these
civilian trucks claim that they were engaged
in contraband.
All the trucks have been hijacked from the
town of Harshin. Ten of the 14 trucks are
owned by citizens of the Norwestern province
of Somalia. The remaining four trucks are
owned by locals from Dhagax Buur. Latest
reports indicate that the ten trucks owned
by the Somalis from Somalia have been
released from detension while the four owned
by the locals from Dhagax Buur are still
held in the detension center. It appears the
release of the trucks and the detension of
those belonging to the locals is a clear
sign of Ethiopian militia preference to
dissuade locals from engaging in any form of
business.
In a related news, it is reported that
fierce battles took place in the outskirts
of the towns of Dhuxun, and Garbo. The
battles are between the Ogaden National
Liberation Army, ONLA, and the Woyane
militias deployed in and around these two
strategic towns. We do not have details of
the battles and will be reporting soon.
