O.N.L.F Condemns Detention of Swedish Journalists by Ethiopia with the Assistance of the Puntland Authorities

E-mail Print PDF

ONLF have lost contact with two Swedish Photojournalists on their way to Ogaden from Puntland since July 1, 2011 and a pro-Ethiopian tabloid in Somali is reporting that The Ethiopian army arrested the two journalists, publishing their names and claiming that the Army killed some of their guides. ONLF also received a tip from sources inside the Puntland Administration that the Ethiopian Army was tipped by Puntland Security regarding the two journalists. The two photojournalists are Mr Johan Persson and Mr Martin Schibbye both working for 'Kontinent photojournalist agency'. ONLF believes that these photojournalists are now in the hands of the Ethiopian government and ONLF fears for their lives and safety.

The ONLF condemns the arrest of Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye who were attempting fulfil their journalistic obligation. This act demonstrates the Ethiopian regimes complete disregard for the rights of the press and it continued determination to prevent any independent reporting from Ogaden in order to hide their on-going war crimes against the people of Ogaden. The ONLF further condemns the Puntland authorities who facilitated the arrest of these Swedish Photojournalists and passed their information to Ethiopian security agents demonstrating the Puntland continued policy of aiding the Ethiopian regime in all matters related to Ogaden, particularly as it relates to the persecution of Ogaden civilians and enforcing Ethiopia's efforts to continue to isolate Ogaden from the outside world.

The ONLF calls on the international community to hold the Ethiopian regime and Puntland authorities to account for this despicable act and pressure them to release the reporters immediately.

"The ONLF condemns the Puntland authorities who facilitated the arrest of these Swedish Photojournalists and passed their information to Ethiopian security agents". Do you mean that these journalists were working to fulfill ONLF missions?

why the Ethiopians hate Photojournalists in Ogaden, do they think they can prevent our independence by arresting journalist. We say think again and leave Ogaden before the great Ethiopian disintegration, it is your best interest.

Munir you look helpless..
written by Ahmed, July 04, 2011
Hi Munir,

you thought writing comments in every web makes TPLF stronger, and ONLF weaker. shame to you and the likes.. TPLF is dependent our fellow juniors like Ilay and his ill-trained militias, the Hawaarin. So, don't get loss in the CyberWar where you look alone. real job is done in Ogaden where ONLF manages based on its wish. These two journalists were detained while they were in the Punt Land area, but not in Ogaden soil.
you can just figure out what truth looks from Ethio's claim, which says 15 reberls killed. Just imagine, if there were fighting among ONLF and ethio's army, and it managed to capture the two journalist alive, what number it could claim that Ethio killed: 70? 100? 150? 600? but now your TPLF mafias claim 15!!!

Sorry for TPLF, and those it depend... Fellow Ogadeni boys like Ilay..... whom one day should face what they have earned either nice or cruelness.

Ethiopia is the master of Puntland. Faroole and his team are slaves and loyal servants to Zenawi. It comes with little surprise then that servants to obey their master. ONLF supporters are spread from Jijiga to Godey, to Kismaayo to Garrissa. Faroole, ex- taxi driver in Australia, your days are numbered....we will catch one day either in Godey, in Kismaayo or in Garrissa.

Kismaayo,
Somalia

Puntland leaders and So called Northwestern AKA Somaliland have been 4 working n spying 4 Ethiopian regime before even the Ogaden war. It is proven fact that cannot be denied but have been in secret. They have no respect for any international law nor Islamic law. I honestly believe they are another enemy 4 not only the Ogaden Somalis but also for all Somali people. They are the reason why Somalia has been in trouble 4 last 21 years. Therefore, I condemned the arrest of 2 Swedish journalist by Ethiopia and their agent Puntland. They have no respect for any international law nor Islamic law. They should be released without any condition. They were only there for one reason; report the truth of hidden Ogaden genocide committed by Ethiopian regime. I also ask those true Somalis in Puntland region should consider throwing the Puntland leaders who serve and spy for Ethiopia. There are 2 governments that make a profit from the misery of Somali people, Ethiopia and Kenya.

Puntland, another Kilil in ethiopia
written by somali, July 05, 2011
I strongly condemn the detention of swedes journalists by ethipia. I also condemn the Puntland state of somalia for thier role in the arrest of the journalist. I call people in puntland to not lose the long term somali relationship with their brother and sisters in the helpless region of Ogaden. Finally, my thanks goes to the swedes journalists who made a courageous attempt to reach Ogaden and uncover the untold stories.
