O.N.L.F Statement On South Sudan Referendum

E-mail Print PDF

In 1981 the OAU committee mediating between Somalia and Ethiopia regarding the conflict in the Ogaden ,declared that the Ogaden is part of Ethiopia. That decision was based on the 1964 resolution of the OAU promulgated in Cairo regarding the sanctity of the African borders left by colonialism. That unjust resolution in no way took into account the aspirations of the people of Ogaden and wrongly portrayed the Ogaden conflict as a border dispute between two States when it is infact a conflict borne from the desire of the Ogaden people for self-determination.

Despite the AU turning a blind eye to the plight of the Ogaden people and it's lack of interest in addressing the root causes of the Ogaden conflict, the decision to allow the people of the South Sudan to take a referendum to decide their destiny is a great day for all people denied their rights to self-determination in Africa. President Bashir of Sudan is to be commended for agreeing to this bold and visionary step forward in the interest of justice and peace

This vote represents a precedent affirming that there is no longer a moral or so-called legal basis for denying the Ogaden people their legitimate rights to self-determination and that the AU bears a direct responsibility to address protracted conflicts which require a comprehensive political solution especially when those conflicts are based on the legitimate aspirations of African peoples to achieve self-determination.

The fact of the matter is that the Ogaden people will achieve their rights through a protracted peoples’ struggle whether the current or future Ethiopian regimes like it or not. It would be appropriate for the AU and peace loving nations to be on the right side of history and address the Ogaden conflict with the same energy and interest afforded the South Sudan conflict. The AU should not wait for Genocide to take on unimaginable proportions before engaging itself in this conflict. The fact that the Ethiopian regime is engaged in war crimes and crimes againstb humanity in Ogaden is well documented. Ogaden warrants AU intervention now.

Ogadenia will be free from habasha when Somalia's peace returns! Somalia does not have any borders with Ethiopia now. when central government of somalia returns, the border with ethiopia will be solved and western Somalia goes nowhere. the only solution will be the ogadenia peopls interest, weather they will vote for an independent nation or unite with other somalis!!!

The border problems of Ethiopia and Somalia has been dealt and solved with several Ethio-Somali treaties. Somali people of Ethiopia are part of Ethiopian family. We are happy. We will live with our brothers for ever. As for the bandits (Shiftas) let them die one by one. May Allah bless the great nation of Ethiopia.

Everybody has rights and freedom to enjoy his own country but the people who are under oppression of regime I guess the world may not fair to see the facts of ogaden region and the population who live in the region are completly different from the rest of Ethiopia as follows: culturally, religion and historically.
one point of thier difference ogadenise 50% are pastrolism and the rest lives small town which Ethiopian militia troups surrounded by strangling, raping womens and toturing innocent children and old people who can not ran or escape the ruthless and brutality of armed militia.
All the population of ogaden region are ethnic somali. They are all muslim and if referendum is held they will take thier independent from Ethiopia just like southern sudense because of them christian and they can;t share economically, socially, religion. That is why successfully voted for independence of self dermination from north of suden.
The region has alot of oil under ground and Ethiopia wants to make business which is not benifit the people who lives in the region and that is why is O.N.L.F protecting the resources and right of thier people untill hopefully reach their aim and objectives that one day thier people will enjoy freedom of expression, freedom of election, freedom of movement, freedom of business, and also freedom of media
my parents are originated ogaden region and I love ogaden and I hate the current rulling Ethiopia regime woe be tides the one who causes the disaster and catastrophy and the endless conflict and war in Ethiopia general.

(Ruun) yh, you are absolutely right, somalia have never ever ruled ogadenian territory, you have always been part of ethiopia!!! I don't undrestand why are somalis care of ogadenians when you are 100% ethiopians! we lost 1/3 of our somali army and ½ of all somali airforces duing ogadenian war, and that war crushed somalias economy and made somalia the weakest nation in africa..I dindt know some ogadenians were in love with ethiopian rules! thank you for learning me something, peace out ethio ppl...smilies/wink.gif
