Meles scolds the regional presidents

E-mail Print PDF
At the end of April, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi gave a severe ticking off to the presidents of the regional states.

Three ministers (Seyoum Mesfin, Addisu Legesse, Bereket Simon) also attended the meeting with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi when he set into the Presidents of the Regional States, accusing them of not preparing well for the elections. The Minister Desalegn Haile Mariam (former President of the country's South State) was the only one to whom he paid any compliments. For the others, it was a terrible letdown.

Abadula Gemeda (Oromia State) was accused of paying more attention to himself than to his work. Tsegaye Berhe (Tigray) was called a "debtera", a kind of regional religious smooth-speaking and intriguing dignitary. Meles Zenawi reproached Ayalew Gobezie (Amhara) of using rhetoric as a substitute for efficiency. And he accused Shiferaw Shigute (South) of spending his time pampering himself and doing nothing else. Any who tried to defend themselves were knocked onto the ropes. Meles Zenawi even cut Addisu Legesse short when he wanted to speak in defence of the regional presidents.
