Ethiopian police undergoes extensive pruning

E-mail Print PDF

After an evaluation session, locally known as gimgema, which began last week, 260 policemen including many officers were sacked from their posts. For its part, the penitentiary administration headed by the Tigrayan Berhane Melka also sacked 20 officers who had been in the post for many years and for the most part were from the Amhara and Oromo ethnic groups.

Among them were Colonel Geremew, Majors Girma Haile Mariam, Tefera and Masresha, as well as some lieutenants.

Several of them were instructors of Tigrayan people who are now in the top echelons of the administration. The gimgema will now consider the case of policemen and penitentiary agents in the ranks.
