Major problem at Gibe II power station

E-mail Print PDF
The largest hydro-electric dam in Ethiopia, Gilgel Gibe II, has been out of action for the last few days. This 420 MW power station cost (EURO) 281 million to build and had a high-profile inauguration last month by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and the Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs Franco Frattini. According to information obtained by The Indian Ocean Newsletter in Addis Ababa, a serious problem was detected about ten days ago in the duct taking water from Gibe I to Gibe II. This 26 km tunnel may have been damaged along several kilometres.

Furthermore, when Gibe II's first generator was turned on, it was impossible to synchronise it with the national electric grid, because of a loss in its load due to a lack of pressure in the water brought in by the tunnel. The generator was therefore immediately stopped and an inspection was necessary to determine the extent of the damage. The repair work will take at least a few weeks and could even last several months, depending on the amount of damage found. This serious incident will place an indeterminate delay on the date when the Gibe II power station, built by the Italian firm Salini, will plug the country's energy shortfall.
