A new set of mass dismissals in the regional administrations and the parties in the ruling EPRDF coalition is looming on the horizon. It will take the form of a critical appraisal of results known as Gimgemawhich frequently hides a political purge. It began in the Benishangul Gumuz Regional State (ION 1316), and spread to the Somali Regional State (South Eastern Ethiopia) under the leadership of AbayTsehaye, the former national security advisor to Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. Many officials in this region have already been dismissed, and others will soon join them.
In the Afar Regional State, this Gimgema was the occasion to raise the defences against the region's President, Ismael Ali Siro. Despite that, he should keep his job as there is no candidate in the offing considered a credible successor by the EPRDF heavyweights. An identical Gimgema will then be carried out in other factions of the EPRDF, namely the OPDO (Omoro) and the ANDM (Amhara).
