Meles Zenawi has reshuffled his team. His advisors are all loyal to him, some more competent than others.
Two of the new advisors to Prime Minister Meles Zenawi are political appointees rather than competent technicians. They are Tsegaye Berhe, the former President of the Tigray Regional State (2003-2010) and ArkebeOqubay Mitiku, the ambitious former mayor of Addis Ababa. The first was appointed advisor on national security with the rank of minister, replacing AbayTsehaye who has been transferred to run the Sugar Corporation, with the rank of Minister. Tsegaye Berhe has always been loyal to Meles Zenawi and is in fact a distant relative. He is also on good terms with Azeb Mesfin, the Prime Minister's wife - which was not the case for Arkebe Oqubay. The latter would have preferred to become Deputy Prime Minister or a minister with an important portfolio, but Meles Zenawi preferred to have him by his side, so as to keep an eye on him.
Shiferaw Jarso, the new advisor for water resources in the Nile valley is competent in the field. But his stance against Egypt is firmer than that of Meles Zenawi. Newaye-Kristos Gebreab, who like the Prime Minister is from Adwa in Tigray, has been maintained in his post of economic advisor. The same would seem to be the case for Fasil Nahum, who has been legal advisor for decades.
