An Island of Food in Africa’s Horn of Hunger

E-mail Print PDF

By Thomas C. Mountain

Most people in Africa spend most of their income on food. With food prices rising by over 50% drought is not the only cause of hunger in the Horn of Africa. While southern Ethiopia, home to half of Ethiopia’s 80 million people, is suffering under its worst drought and famine in 60 years, residents in the northern capital of Addis Ababa are feeling the pinch of hunger due to near record high food prices.

Yet next door to Ethiopia in Eritrea, where we have been living since 2006, there exists an island of food security where grain prices have fallen by half and hunger has become a thing of the past.

Why is it that according to Sukhwinder Singh Toor, the IMF capo in Addis Ababa in 2010, Ethiopia needs over $7 billion in aid a year yet millions starve, while neighboring Eritrea gets a tiny fraction of that and staple grain prices are falling dramatically?

While in early 2011 the UN Famine Early Warning System predicted millions would be starving in the southern half of Ethiopia the Meles Zenawi regime in power  in Addis Ababa was exporting food, over 10,000 tons of rice in 2010 to Saudi Arabia alone.

Land in Ethiopia, good land, can be bought by foreigners from the government for a song, even less if leased for 99 years, putting another $100 million or more into the pockets of P.M. Meles Zenawi and his cronies. All the while basics like wheat, barley, sorghum and chick peas become so expensive malnutrition rates for children spike.

Ethiopia is the birth place of the Nile river yet millions starve while in Eritrea, mostly semiarid, some 60% of the country’s food is produced via micro dam fed irrigation systems, beginning to break the age old dependency on the rains to feed the people.

The drought maps for the Horn of Africa show an area running from Sudan to Ethiopia to Somalia and even Kenya yet in its midst, unnoticed by those reading their teleprompters on the news channels there exists an island the size of Britain where affordable bread is there for all and slowly but steadily, life gets better.

Johnny Carson, US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa may claim famine rages in Eritrea but then he also says Ethiopia’s economy continues to grow by double digits annually and never mentions a figure for the number of Ethiopian children that die every day of starvation.

Life expectancy in Ethiopia is falling, maybe plunging is a better word while even the World Bank uses words like “dramatic” to describe the improvements in life expectancy in Eritrea. Eritrea is one of the very few countries in the world that will meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), especially in the area of health for its children, malaria mortality prevention and reduction of AIDS.

Hillary Clinton may call Eritrea a dictatorship and Ethiopia a democracy but if one measures human rights by access to clean drinking water, food, shelter and medical care rather than stuffed ballot boxes and fixed elections than the descriptions would have to be reversed.

The Horn of Africa may be the Horn of Hunger for millions but in the midst of all the drought, starvation and suffering there lives and grows an island of food security, little Eritrea and its five million people.

Unfortunately, none of this may be enough to prevent the UN inSecurity Council from passing even tougher sanctions against Eritrea in an attempt to damage the Eritrean economy and, inevitably, hurt the Eritrea people. This is all done, once again, in the name of fighting the War on Terror, or more accurately, the War on the Somali people.

Mr. Mountain is an unofficial spokesperson of the Eritrean Gov.PFDJ and he was actually hired by PFDJ to misinform the international community. I don`t raise any issue because most people know the truth anyway, in cyber world Mr. Mountain’s article influences 0.0000001% members of the international community on eritrean issues. BBC, RT, press TV, AFP neglect taking his reports and he was going bankrupt but PFDJ who ignores our ppl and martyrs children to survive but they could help this bankrupted man!!!

'....the only independent western journalist ....living and reporting from Eritrea....'. This says it all. If your report sounded differently then there will be no 'independent western reporter' in Eritrea.

All of east africa has huge problems but at least the other countries are not trying to hide it. Shame on shabia and their Khamer Rouge ways. Leave power and let the eritrean people go free.

You should be dreaming or handsomely paid to write such an article. Eritrea today hard has a population of 3 million. All are fleeing the unbearable situation. Addis alone has more than 3 million. further this is the names Eritrea has earned by all well informed angles this days and therefore deserves no single praise irrespective of dams or roads. Human being comes first. Nothing is worth if the dignity of Eritreans is suppressed by any one even if he feds them 7 times.

Mr. Mountain a.k.a "the only western reprter in Eritrea",

What would be the reason that you are still hunging in Eritrea the answer is more than clear to any Eritrean who knows the facts on the ground. We Eritreans have been fooling ourselves for so many years, and now we want to make ourselves believe so many myths the PFDJs create. But we have come to a time where we are questioning ourselves and we have come to a decision where no Mr. Mountain has to dectate on behalf of the opressed and mistreated people. Mr. Mountain, please auto extradite yourself from our country, your reports are biassed and you are not going to influence anyone.

Facts speak for themsleves. If Eritrea begs and licks the ass's of the big ones, not one would create trouble for her. If you kill thousands, starve your people but became the poodle of the powerful in mascle but morally bankrupt empty and soulless, you will be rewarded with more money and false atributes. In the Nazi period, the art of propaganda was perfected by Geobbels and since then all villians emulate him and try to paint peoples eyes with falsehold and unceasing repetitions. I can see the apologists of the Tyrant- Meles Zenawi could no keep out of the people, where the people they are massacring air their view. you and your vile utterances are not welcome here.

You know whats very sad? There are people who are clueless of the overall political, economic, and historical realities of the world. You so called Eritreans who are traitors to the people of Eritrea will one day wake up and realize that our beloved Eritrean Government is not the problem, but a solution to many problems in the world. There is a world war that every nation is fighting, and every nation is out for its own interest. The west with there so called democracy (which is futile in Africa and many other places) and information outlets are used to hinder any development anywhere in the world but their nations. Eritrea is a treat to these nations because Eritrea brings a realistic hope and solution to the dire political and economic crisis in Africa. One major solution is the concept of self-reliance, which has been implemented by our beloved government prior to independence and continues to do so after. I say to the world, and to all you blind sheep's, you can talk or type your ignorance on any media outlet of your personal belief of the Eritrean government, but we Eritreans and the conscious people of the world know the real problem in Africa (and world), it is the puppet (modern day slaves) leaderships in Africa and their masters. We Eritrean also know who our opposition in the cyber world who criticize us and our government are. You are not Eritrean but agents of our enemies. Thomas, once again you have done a great job, keep up the good work and to all people please conduct in depth research of political, economic, and social issues in the world, it all leads to one source- The BANKSTERS...ROTHSCHILD FAMILY and other family's and organizations....The Rothschild family owns over 50% of the world wealth that's over 500 trillion dollars.... and these families are the root of all world problems. Leaders like our beloved President Isiais Afwerki and Mummar Gaddafi (and many who have been targeted and killed....such as Patrice lumumba, Thomas Sankara Che Guevera) are a threat to these BANKERS, and people need to wake up and pluck out the root of the problem. MAY GOD BLESS ERITREA, THE PEOPLE OF ERITREA, AND OUR BELOVED GOVERNMENT, AND MAY GOD PUNISH THE WICKED AND AWAKEN THE BLIND.

I have never been to Eritrea, as I am an Ethiopian but I can get my news from two sources: From the pro ad anti Eritrea sources. I don’t know what it is but I can clearly tell that the government of Eritrea is doing something good for its citizens. Why? Because for the simple fact that the west is against the GOE and the people who write balanced article are those individuals. My poor Ethiopian people are busy blaming shabian for our own weakness. Woyane is killing our people and the western nations are coordinating for the killing. Many people are commented in here and some pretending to be Eritreans while they in fact are woyane supporters: their purpose is to divert our attention from the real issues that are facing our people.
