HEADLINE: Lawyers in the eye of the Ethiopian
storm |
BODY:
The Ethiopian government would appear to
want to facilitate the creation of a
lawyers' association favourable to it. It is
therefore unenthusiastic about renewing the
operating licence for the existing
EthiopianBar Association (EBA) which it
is no longer able to control. A first step
in this offensive consists in sidelining and
isolating the chairman of the EBA, Tameru
Wendemeagegnehu. Meanwhile, lawyers
close to the ruling coalition are planning
to create another association which would
have the support of the government. In the
lead of this operation are the lawyers
Million Assefa and Mebrahitu Yohannes.
The latter, a Tigrayan from the town
of Adwa, is the lawyer to Prime Minister
Meles Zenawi and the Tigray
People's Liberation Front.
