Broadcasting Ethiopian Mass Murderous Intentions

June 15, 2007

Nearly a year ago, the head of the Addis autocracy Mr. Zenawi announced to the world that his illiterate and poorly paid soldiers were instructed to attack Ogaden National Liberation Army, ONLA. As he put it at the time, the objective was to ‘conduct military sweeps’ whatever that meant.

On June 11th, exactly ten months later, Zenawi was at it again telling the world community through a press conference that [he] launched a political and military operation to try to contain the activities of the ONLF (Ogaden National Liberation Front) in the region.

What Mr. Zenawi does NOT tell the world is that what he termed in two thousand and six a ‘military sweep’ and he is now terming ‘political and military operation’ is the launching of a mass murder campaign intended to exact maximum casualties on the Ogaden civilians.

He knows full well that his unmotivated soldiers are no match for ONLF or ONLA whose soldiers are better trained, motivated, and more knowledgeable on the Ogaden terrain. However his target was in August 2006 and again is in June 2007 the Ogaden civilians whom he had murdered in the thousands since the last campaign.

Prime example of this being the case is the fact that in the 2006 campaign, ONLF not only rebelled successfully any Ethiopian military attempt to dislodge them from Ogaden but they even succeeded in killing twenty six of the highest ranking military officials who were leading the misnamed ‘military sweep’ campaign including its head one general Mulugeta, a close relative of Mr. Zenawi.

Since there is no longer talk of a ‘sweep’ in Zenawi’s parlance but a more modest containment strategy shows that he, Zenawi, and his minions have come to the conclusion that ONLF is here to stay militarily in Ogaden. His main objective now is the execution of mass detentions, as is already seen throughout Ogaden, coupled with mass rape, maiming and extra judicial killings of the Ogaden citizenry.

Even though the Addis autocracy knows that its planned activities are mass murder camouflaged as a ‘crack down’, it, Addis autocracy, is hoping that exacting maximum revenge on the Ogaden civilians is the only hope it has left to somehow pressure ONLF to cease its military activities.

Zenawi and his clique in Addis Ababa have made their murderous intentions known to the world community through a press conference. They have already started executing their plans with mass detentions, extra judicial killings of some of the detained, and political assassinations of even some of those who work for them, as seen in JigJiga bombing recently, in the hope of creating clan conflicts within the Ogaden Somalis.

It is a fact not lost to the Addis Clique that every rule in international law prohibits the use of civilians either as shields or as a conduit to force one’s enemy to cease and desist. What Zenawi and his Addis autocracy have announced and have started to execute is mass murder of Ogaden civilians. It t is about time that the world community come to the aid of the Ogaden civilians.

Press conferences and political pronouncements aside, Zenawi and his clique should be brought to The Hague as world criminals. They should be made accountable for their mass murderous policies and the execution of these policies against the helpless Ogaden populace. Let us not watch while another Rwanda unfolds in front of our eyes.
